It is a question many students and parents ask. Does attending a summer school actually make a difference when it comes to applying to university?

The short answer is: it depends on what you do with it.

A summer school on its own is not a magic credential. Admissions tutors at top universities see many applications from students who have attended programmes, and a line on a personal statement saying "I attended a summer school" carries little weight. What carries weight is evidence that the experience genuinely deepened your thinking, confirmed your direction, or challenged your assumptions.

A well-chosen summer school gives you material. If you spend two weeks studying law at Oxford, engaging with real cases, arguing in moot courts, and grappling with questions about justice and rights, you have something specific to write about. You can describe how your understanding of a particular area of law shifted, what you realised about the kind of lawyer or policymaker you want to be, or how a debate changed how you think about a problem. That is compelling.

The letter of recommendation matters too. At Oxford Horizon Academy, students receive a letter of recommendation from their academic instructor. A letter from someone who taught you in a rigorous academic setting, who can speak specifically to your intellectual curiosity and potential, carries genuine value.

Beyond the application itself, the most important thing a summer school can do is help you work out what you actually want to study and why. Universities want students who know their own minds. Two weeks of immersive academic study, at the right level and in the right environment, is one of the best ways to develop that clarity.
