What to Expect from a Summer School in Oxford
Oxford Horizon Academy
3 min read

So you're considering a summer school in Oxford. Perhaps a teacher mentioned it, a parent suggested it, or you've simply always been drawn to the idea of studying in one of the world's most iconic academic cities. Whatever brought you here, you are probably wondering: what does it actually feel like? What will I do? Will it be worth it?
Here's an honest, inside look at what to expect.
You'll Study Like a University Student, Not Like You Do at School
Oxford is famous for a reason. The teaching style here is different. It's discussion-led, intellectually demanding, and designed to make you think rather than memorise. At Oxford Horizon Academy, you won't sit through passive lectures or fill in worksheets. You'll be challenged to form arguments, defend positions, and engage with ideas at a level that most students don't encounter until university.
You'll choose a major (one of five carefully curated subjects) and go deep into it over two weeks. Whether you're drawn to law, economics, medicine, international relations, or another field, your course will be taught by leading academics who bring real expertise into the room. Alongside your major, you'll pick a minor to broaden your intellectual horizons and explore something new.
By the end of the two weeks, most students say the same thing: I didn't know I could think like this.
You'll Live in Oxford, Not Just Visit It
There's a difference between visiting Oxford for a day and actually living there. When you're here for two weeks, the city becomes yours.
You'll be based in authentic Oxford accommodation, surrounded by centuries of history. You'll walk the same streets as generations of scholars before you. You'll have your morning coffee looking out at ancient spires. You'll study in historic settings that remind you, every single day, that you are somewhere extraordinary.
Oxford isn't just a backdrop. It becomes part of the experience, and part of you.
You'll Make Friends From Around the World
One of the things students consistently say surprised them most is the people. Oxford Horizon Academy brings together intellectually curious, ambitious young people from dozens of countries. Students aged 14 to 18, all drawn to the same thing: a love of learning and a desire to do something meaningful with their summer.
These aren't just classmates for two weeks. The friendships formed here, built on shared intellectual experiences, late-night conversations, and the unique intensity of being somewhere extraordinary together, tend to last.
Your Days Will Be Full, In the Best Possible Way
A typical day at Oxford Horizon Academy moves between academic sessions, activities, and shared experiences. Mornings and afternoons are focused on your major and minor courses. Evenings bring student clubs and societies: spaces to pursue passions beyond the academic, from debating and entrepreneurship to creative writing and more.
Throughout the programme, there are cultural excursions, social events, and opportunities to explore Oxford and beyond. You won't have a moment to be bored. But more than that, you won't want to be.
You'll Get Genuine Support for Your University Journey
For many students, Oxford Horizon Academy is also a pivotal moment in their path to university. Our college application support programme offers expert guidance on applications to top universities worldwide, whether you're aiming for Oxford, Cambridge, the Ivy League, or other leading institutions.
You'll receive a letter of recommendation from your academic instructor, and you'll leave with a significantly stronger sense of what you want to study and why. Many alumni describe the two weeks as the moment their university ambitions crystallised.
You Might Also Leave With a Scholarship
Oxford Horizon Academy offers merit-based scholarships for exceptional students. Full scholarships cover the complete programme fee. Partial scholarships cover between 10% and 50%. If you're applying to the summer school, you can indicate your interest in being considered and our Scholarship Team will take it from there.
Financial circumstances should never stand between a talented student and an experience like this. If you're the kind of student this programme is designed for, we want you here.
Is It Worth It?
The answer is always yes.
Two weeks in Oxford won't just be the best summer you've had. For many students, it's a turning point: the moment they discovered what they're capable of, what they want to pursue, and who they want to become.
